Appliqué is the method of applying a decorative fabric motif to your work.

Appliqué is the method of applying a decorative fabric motif to your work. This could be a hand-stitched felt shape, patterns cut from pre-printed fabric, or fabric shapes you have drawn freehand or using templates.

There are many appliqué techniques varying in complexity, but to begin let's keep it simple.

Bear in mind you'll be sewing around the edge of your shape so don't choose a design that is too intricate – the outline of a hexagon is easier to sew than that of a tree!
